Workshop: “Doing language perception experiments” by Dr. James Gruber
presented by the Linguistics Department, Payap UniversityMarch 24 & 27 1:00pm – 4:00pm Room 214 Pentecost Bldg, MaeKhao Campus, Payap UniversityListening seems to occur without effort, but the successful comprehension of an utterance involves several steps: the segmentation of continuous speech, the categorical assignment of speech sounds, the activation and then recognition of lexical items, and at last, comprehension.

In this workshop, we will cover each of these operations and the experimental methods that have been used to test them.

We will also explore the ways that psycholinguistic experiments can offer insights into linguistic structure, with an emphasis on perceptual experiments of tone. Attendees will gain understanding of how linguistic patterns influence the way people listen and vice versa, in addition to fundamental aspects of experimental design in linguistics.

The workshop sessions will be divided between lecture and hands-on practice with a break between them. Hands-on tutorials in Praat and experiment presentation software will cover how to create, resynthesize, and present stimuli. If you want to participate in the hands-on practice, bring your computer.

Please RSVP to pyulingdept@gmail.com by Monday at 3:00pm if you wish to attend this workshop.

A Payap University Communication:
An Appeal to All Sides to Use Peaceful Methods to Solve the Current Thai Political ConflictPayap University is an educational institution founded on Christian faith, with the purpose of producing graduates who bring about social change peacefully, standing steadfastly for “Truth and Service”. We implant in students a respect for the honor and dignity of every sector of humanity in their status as God’s great and beautiful creation.Payap University is greatly concerned about the political conflict in Thai society at present as it appears in overseas communications media where it seems that the conflict might lead to a civil war in Thai society. Therefore, Payap University would like to state its position and call on all sides in the conflict as follows:

1. It is the right of all Thai citizens to peacefully assemble for political purposes without weapons, and disagreement is normal human behavior; therefore, all sides should be conscious of the fact that people might have differing opinions without being enemies, which are occasions for all people to learn from one another while showing mutual respect and trust in order to lead to appropriate solutions for the nation.

2. Thai society has had several lessons in which political conflict has resulted in many deaths. Thus, all involved must be conscious of and give importance to the ultimate importance of human safety. Those who gather to press for political issues must do so peacefully, without provoking or endangering government officials. Also, government officials must have the utmost patience not to use violent force against those who assemble, in order to avoid loss of life for all sectors, for life is valuable and sacred in the sight of God.

3. All sides in this conflict have stated positions that they will carry out their efforts and solve the conflict by peaceful means. Therefore, the people of Payap University would like to offer praise and support toward this end, and call on all to use peaceful means to resolve the conflict through the use of dialogue as soon as possible in order to avoid violence and loss of life that would follow.

4. In order to step beyond conflict that might lead to violence in Thai society again in the future, Payap University sees the urgent need for Thai social reform, which stems from participation and agreement from all sectors of society and individuals cooperating to secure a good political system and political leaders free from corruption and aware of benefits that accrue from all truly participating, utilizing effective and transparent mechanisms and systems.

The people of Payap University pray to God that Thai society might be delivered from the troubles of this political crisis, and that God will open the hearts of those on all sides to turn to discuss what is best for Thai society, to return to peace based on love, compassion and consideration as brothers and sisters in the country under the same three-colored flag.

The Social Entrepreneurship course, delivered by Bruce and Ann Borquist (pictured), introduces participants to the field of social entrepreneurship and the best practices of starting and growing successful mission-driven ventures. The field of social entrepreneurship is rapidly gaining attention around the world from entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists, foundations, and consulting firms. Social ventures aim to achieve a “triple bottom line” with meaningful social returns, sustainable or competitive financial returns, and measurable benefit to the natural environment through their products, services and other business practices. Entrepreneurial solutions to education, healthcare, environment, workforce development, international development, and other significant societal issues are being addressed through both for-profit and non-profit social ventures.

As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain to Board members and funders the rationale for starting or continuing a social enterprise, and defend its part in the mission, vision and services of their church or NGO.
2. Identify, evaluate, and select opportunities for a social venture.
3. Evaluate their entrepreneurial characteristics and those of their current or potential teammates.
4. Mobilize the financial, human, cultural and physical resources needed to start and operate the social enterprise.
5. Prepare a one-page business plan to describe and promote the venture.
6. Put in place the measurement systems and metrics necessary to evaluate the impact of the social enterprise according to the “triple bottom line.”

About the lecturers: Bruce and Ann serve as missionaries through International Ministries, ABCUSA. They have taught and consulted in the areas of church-based self-help community and economic development, organizational development, cross-cultural missionary training and mission mobilization in Africa, Asia, North America and Latin America for more than 30 years.

Payap International College (IC) Basketball Team
by Eric Duwe
7 January, 2013Chiang Mai, Thailand: The road to winning a sports championship can be long. But for the “Inter Payap” basketball team competing in the eighth annual Yupparaj Basketball Tournament in Chiang Mai, the road is particularly long — extending from places such as Bhutan, Canada, Germany, Korea, and the United States of America, for example.En route to that championship, “Inter Payap” competed in its first game in the tournament — the biggest of its kind in the North of Thailand — this past Friday 04 January. It was a fast-paced game that remained close throughout, but resulted in “Inter Payap” pulling away at the end with a final score of 90-80.

The team members of “Inter Payap” all have a connection with the International College of Payap University, whether as current students or recently graduated alumni. And the diversity of the team comes from more than just the ethnic backgrounds of its players. Players from the team represent all four of the International College’s undergraduate programs and two of its graduate programs.

For many of the guys, playing basketball has been a way to make friends, both international and Thai, throughout the community while also getting a good workout. Payap University has been awarded a grant of US$700,000 (approx. 21,000,000 Thai baht) by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through its American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program, for its ambitious Solar Project. Through this grant, Payap University will be able to install solar equipment on its main campus to generate electricity and partially defray the cost of energy consumption and enhance environmental education and awareness. Payap University pays an exorbitant amount of its operating budget on electricity. This is money that could be better used for other educational needs, such as learning tools, student facilities, faculty teaching aids, faculty development, scholarships for needy students, additional staff, or any number of other worthy endeavors. Additionally, Payap obtains electricity from local power generating sources, all of whom use predominantly fossil fuels. Installing solar units to produce at least some of its own electricity, Payap would be able to save significant funds, as well as helping to lower carbon emissions and reduce dependency on vanishing oil and other fossil fuel resources.

This project is expected to complete by the latter part of the calendar year 2014.

(Payap University is supported by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia for the administration of this grant.)

Payap University welcomes United Board Fellow Dr. Qiufeng Ji from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China. Dr. Ji (pictured with Payap’s President Dr. Penpilai and Dr. Prathana) is the Vice Director for the Department of History at Nanjing, and is also a Professor for its School of International Studies. Dr. Ji will be with Payap for a period of three months, under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Prathana Langkarpint and the International Affairs department.

The United Board Fellows Program prepares talented mid-career faculty and administrators for future leadership in their home universities and colleges in Asia. The United Board Fellows Program provides opportunities for participants to be exposed to leadership concepts and practices in university settings in Asia and in the U.S. or Australia. The United Board selects twenty to thirty fellows for each two-year program cycle. One hundred and ten fellows from 39 institutions have completed the program, which began in 2002.

The goal of the United Board Fellows Program is to build strong institutions of higher education with many levels of competent leadership and a pool of talent to lead Asian higher education in the future. A further purpose is to strengthen networks among the individuals and institutions involved in the Fellows Program. Candidates for the Fellows Program are nominated by the top administration of their institutions. The nomination identifies the faculty member’s potential leadership roles, such as department chair, academic dean, dean of students. Once selected, fellows spend two semesters, one per academic year, at host institutions in the US or Australia, and in Asia. They also participate in five-day leadership seminars at the end of each academic year to share their learning with other fellows. During their placements, fellows observe and participate in the life of the host institution, including its administrative and academic sides.

Payap University is proud to host the following special guest lecture…

“Everything you’ve always wanted to know about the euro crisis and were afraid to ask!”

(The Eurozone financial crisis explained in plain English – it’s not all Greek!)

In the post-war rush toward European integration, the founders of the
European Union managed to put the cart in front of the horse in the
form of a common currency, the euro. It seems that this phenomenon may
be dragging both horse and cart down a financial abyss, along with the
global economy.

Speaker: Dr. Ho Nguyen, Professor Emeritus of Economics, St. Mary’s College of Maryland (USA) and Visiting Professor at Payap University

Date: Thursday, 8 November 2012, 5-6pm

Venue: Room 317, Pentecost Building (Mae Khao main campus)

This special lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Thomas Tilley, full-time professor for the Information Technology (IT) program at Payap University’s International College, took the 1st prize for the African Robotics Network’s (AFRON) “10 Dollar Robot” Design Challenge. His creation, aptly named “Suckerbot,” is pictured on the left.

The goal of the African Robotics Network’s “10 Dollar Robot” Design Challenge, which ran from 15 June to 15 September 2012, was to design a new class of affordable robots for learning (especially in primary and secondary schools). According to Dr. Thomas, “Suckerbot is essentially a modified Dualshock-like USB joystick with wheels, a Chupa-Chupa bump sensor on one thumbstick, and a line sensor patched in to the other thumbstick. The robot is designed to be built from scratch by the user for a total cost of US$8.96 (or roughly 270 baht), excluding scavenged parts.”

Wired Magazine also covered the event and commented on the competition:

“Suckerbot, designed by Thomas Tilley, a computer scientist living in Thailand, started with a hacked PlayStation controller, and wound up winning first prize in the tethered robot category. In this case, the tether is the controller’s USB cable, and Tilley attached the rumble motors to a pair of wheels. Suckerbot’s list of parts comes to $8.96, but the real genius is the Chupa Chups. Tilley needed a way for the robot to sense if it ran into something, so he stuck a lollipop in each joystick. Whenever the Suckerbot bumps something, the weight of the sucker tips the joystick forward, and a signal is sent to the processor.”

The Payap University Choir (College of Music) has just returned from an enormously successful trip to the United States. The Payap Choir was selected to represent Thailand at the World Choir Games 2012 held in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, from 13-15 July, 2012. The World Choir Games is an international competition, very much like the Olympic Games. It takes place every two years at different venues around the world. This year’s event brought 20,000 participants and tens of thousands of visitors from more than 70 countries to the US city of Cincinnati, the first American city ever to host the World Choir Games. The Payap Choir participated in a number of competitions and was awarded two Silver Medals in the categories of “Music Contemporanea” and “Mixed Chamber Choirs.”

The Payap Choir was also asked to perform in two friendship concerts. The PYU choir sang songs from His Majesty the King’s compositions, as well as Northern Thailand songs. They received extremely positive responses from the audience, including many Thais who were in attendance. Additionally, the PYU choir was invited, along with 40 other choirs from around the world, to perform with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra during the closing ceremony concert.

The Payap community congratulates the Payap University Choir for their accomplishments. This was an extremely successful trip for all involved, including the students and faculty of the Payap University College of Music.

Message from the President.
[Please click here for my latest updates.]This “SPARKS” or Glittering Points of Light” column (called jut prakai in Thai) is a channel of communication from the President to the people of Payap University. It is suggestions of ideas and policies in administering Payap University in accordance with the Board of Trustees, as well as communication about various matters that come up in our midst, from both within and outside, that everyone should know about in order to have a part in running the university so it moves forward in a lively way toward clear goals. In addition, the column can be like glittering points of light in that it contains thoughts and hopes of the President which can be put into concrete practice, and a collection of thinking which lead to progress in which we can cooperate that lead to sustainable prosperity for our institution. We have to admit that a lot of the time the administrators may think one way but those who carry out the work understand it differently. This may come from a lack of communicating our thinking or even when there has been communication the explanations may be unclear. When that’s the way it is there is misunderstanding, confusion or befuddlement and criticism all over. If this continues it’s certainly not good for the university in general. Therefore, this “Glittering Points of Light” column is one open channel of information about what’s going on around here. It might lead to new ways of thinking or innovation to lead to greater stability for Payap University.

So I want to take this opportunity to invite you members of the faculty, staff, students and others concerned for Payap University to continually keep up with the news and views on this “Glittering Points of Light” and to have a role in searching for creative ideas and cooperative energy sharing, as co-proprietors and developers of various aspects of whatever you are most closely a part of here, which would lead to inspiration in your work, commitment and participation in the ministry in the area you are responsible for, with zeal and vivacity, constantly aware that really our progress and survival is a shared responsibility.

The South East Asian Institute of Global Studies (SEAIGS) at Payap University is proud to announce the second Lifescapes Southeast Asian Film Festival to be held 2-5 February 2012!

Click here to visit the Lifescapes website for more information.
~

A lifescape is an expanse – life, livelihood, and reality – that can be seen in a single view. The Lifescapes Southeast Asian Film Festival screens contemporary films – documentary, docu-drama, or dramatized – to showcase thoughtful work with a social conscience. The festival hopes to raise awareness of film culture and filmmakers of mainland Southeast Asia who make meaningful social commentary with their work – showing the beautiful without flinching from grim reality.

Selected films will explore regional issues within mainland Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Lao, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The program will be interactive, offering directors, producers, media representatives, NGO representatives, and audience members the opportunity to join together in post-screening Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and evening social functions throughout the program.

Organized through the South East Asian Institute of Global Studies (SEAIGS) at Payap University in Chiang Mai, all activities will take place on the Payap University Mae Khao Campus (behind Carrefour) in the Sirindhorn Learning Resource Center. All activities on our campus are FREE and open to the public

“Cashing in across the Golden Triangle: Talk and Book Launch”

Speakers/Authors: Dr. Thein Swe and Dr. Paul Chambers, South East Asian Institute of Global Studies, Payap University

When: Thursday, 3 November 2011, 5-6pm, Room 317, Pentecost Building, Mae Khao Campus

October 2011 saw the publication of Cashing In Across the Golden Triangle, a book about the current economic development and trade situation among states along the North-South Economic Corridor in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Authors Thein Swe and Paul Chambers contend that in an increasingly globalized Mekong basin, regional cooperation is expanding rapidly. In fact, an economic community of sorts is growing among the states of Thailand, Lao PDR, Myanmar and China. Using a variant of realism, this study assesses the state of collaboration among these states with a view towards answering the following questions. How has such collaboration evolved? What have been the successes and obstacles along the way? What might be the future of north-south quadrangular community-building across the Mekong basin?

The authors will give an overview of their new book and have copies available for purchase for 450 baht.

TELLING THE TRUTH AS A REVOLUTIONARY ACT, IN THAILAND AND BEYOND

Speaker: Andrew MacGregor Marshall, Emerging and Frontier Asia Editor, Reuters News

When: Wednesday, 23 March 2011 from 5pm-6:30pm

Venue: Room 317, Pentecost Building, Mae Khao Campus (main campus behind Carrefour off the Superhighway)

“Political language — and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists — is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind,” wrote George Orwell. “One cannot change this all in a moment, but one can at least change one’s own habits.”

This talk examines how official narratives and discourse in Thailand and beyond have often been constructed to obscure the truth, and how these narratives are increasingly unsustainable as information becomes harder to restrict and control. As the Middle East is shaken by profound political change that demonstrates the power of social media and new journalism to transform the world, will telling the truth about Thailand have an equally dramatic impact? The lecture will also provide exclusive details of some recently uncovered documents that help distinguish truth from lies in Thailand.

My name is Thanawuth Kittiwan, but everyone calls me Champ. I am an English major
at Payap. I am now studying abroad at the University of The Gambia in West Africa as the first
Thai student ever to study in The Gambia. I am thankful to St. Mary’s College of Maryland (USA) for inviting me to join their PEACE program in The Gambia as the first Payap student. I will be in The Gambia for one academic semester from mid-January to early-June 2011, and this is also my last semester in college. Living in The Gambia is my second time studying abroad, as I went to study abroad through Payap at Pitzer College, Claremont, California, USA, from fall to spring of academic year 2009 – 2010.Since becoming a college student, I have gained a lot of international experience. I have lived
with international students for the past four and a half academic years both at Payap and while studying abroad in California. At the same time, I have done academic programs in three different countries, including doing a research on American culture and how it is similar and different from Thai culture, and currently, I am doing an exchange program on Gambian culture, politics, and foreign policy in The Gambia. Having lived internationally has taught me how to handle cultural and international
conflicts, but it has also made me much more mature and responsible, two important
characteristics that are required for working globally. Also, not only has studying at Payap afforded me these rich international experiences, but also I have gained much useful comparative knowledge about different belief systems around the world. I graduated from a Catholic high school, was ordained as a Buddhist monk, lived in the USA, where all kinds of beliefs were brought and practiced from countries around the world, have gone to a Christian university in a Buddhist Kingdom, and now I am living in The Gambia, a predominantly Muslim country. All of these amazing experiences have helped me learn about new things and be able to live and work anywhere in the world. Studying abroad through the various opportunities offered by Payap’s Study Abroad Program has taught me to take more initiative and has stimulated my creativity, flexibility, and motivation. I am particularly excited about my service-learning placement this semester in The Gambia where I trust that engaging directly with Gambian society both inside and outside of the classroom will provide a richer experience as I represent Thailand to my Gambian counterparts. I hope to learn as much as I can about Gambian politics and foreign policy as I am really passionate about global politics and international relations, and especially now that I am in The Gambia, I would like to learn as
much as I can about The Gambia as a country.

I encourage other students at Payap to consider studying abroad in Africa, South America and other non-traditional destinations that will particularly challenge your worldview and stretch you in new and important ways as you seek to develop your cross-cultural competencies and engagement with the wider world.

Note: The Republic of the Gambia, commonly known as The Gambia, is the smallest country on mainland Africa. This West African country is bordered to the north, east, and south by Senegal, with 50 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Less than 30 miles wide at its widest point, the narrow country borders mirror the meandering Gambia River. Sometimes called the tongue of West Africa because of its elongated size and location, the country may be small, but it is definitely one with diverse influences on the continent. Gambians are known for their traditional vibrant music and dance forms.

The Duriyasilp New Music Ensemble of the Payap University College of Music has been invited to perform in the USA at the International Trumpet Guild from the 24-28 May, 2011, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, the Payap Ensemble has also been invited to perform at the Second Annual Concert, Asian Young Musicians’ Connection (AYMC), California State University, San Bernardino, California, on the 3rd of June, 2011. These were recent invitations from the USA and as such, the music college has not had enough lead time to obtain the appropriate financing for this trip.
But all is not lost! The College of Music has been feverishly trying to raise the necessary funds and as a part of their fundraising efforts, is sponsoring a “bowling night” at UFO Bowling in Nong Hoy. The event is scheduled for the 26th of February, 2011, from 9 a.m. to midnight. The Ensemble hopes to sell 500 tickets to help raise money for the concert trips to the USA. The cost of the bowling night is 1500 THB, which covers shoe rental and two games for two people.

Payap University will be hosting its first-ever international film festival from 3-6 February, 2011. This festival is being organized by the South East Asian Institute of Global Studies at Payap University.

Titled “The Lifescapes Southeast Asian Film Festival,” this progressive event hopes to showcase films that explore regional issues and human rights struggles within mainland Southeast Asia. The origins of these films include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The festival will screen films and provide both its audiences and directors an open forum for lively discussion. Directors and film-makers will also be invited to speak about the objectives and motivations for their work. The festival will screen contemporary films – documentary, docu-drama, dramatic – to showcase thoughtful work with a social conscience. The festival hopes to raise awareness while celebrating the film culture and filmmakers of Southeast Asia.

Opening and closing receptions, film screenings, discussion panels, and presentations will take place on the Payap University main campus. All films will be subtitled in English (and hopefully Thai also). All activities are free and open to the public.

Faculty members from the McCormick Faculty of Nursing at Payap University have assisted Chiang Mai’s Mplus, a community-based men’s sexual health organization, in developing four animated videos for the four communities they are trying to reach: young MSM (men who have sex with men), transgenders, Thai and migrant male sex workers and ‘hidden MSM’.

Responding to an alarming rise in HIV incidence among MSM in Thailand, Mplus produced animations for their HIV/AIDS outreach and prevention programs. The animations are new educational resources produced to increase understandings of safe sex practices and address low perceptions of personal risk to HIV/AIDS among Chiang Mai’s diverse MSM population.

Mplus works to provide HIV/AIDS outreach and prevention to the diverse community of MSM in Chiang Mai. Reflecting the community to who they provide outreach, Mplus produced animations to be used as an educational resource in each of the communities identified above. The animations are context specific to the needs of Chiang Mai’s MSM community as identified in the research, but Mplus is using them in regional HIV/AIDS outreach and prevention.

Mplus produced the animations with the help of a grant from The Australian Association of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) in collaboration with researchers from The Open University (UK) and The McCormick Faculty of Nursing, Payap University (Thailand). The animations were made by Lanna Media in Chiang Mai.

For more information and to see examples of the animation, please visit www.fridae.asia.

Making history (excerpts)
By Yanapon Musiket
Published: 20/10/2010 at 12:00 AM
Bangkok PostAnthony Morse, former Payap University student, and now the new host of the upcoming series ‘Hidden Cities’, shares his background, experiences and the challenges he faced while filming the show.Life is full of surprises, said Anthony Morse, the new face of History Channel Asia, whose life-changing turning point happened during a commercial break.

It began last year when History Channel Asia announced a competition in search of new talent for the show Hidden Cities, the network’s first series produced in Asia. ”I found out about this while watching the History Channel at home one night,” he said. ”During a commercial break, I heard the spot saying, ‘Do you like to travel? Do you like people? Do you like history and want to be in front of the camera? Then you may have what it takes to be the new host of an upcoming series by the History Channel.’ I immediately thought to myself that everything just mentioned in the spot combined all my interests and passions into one perfect job description. So I went to their official website to check out all the details on how to apply,” he said.

Born in 1980 to an American father and Thai mother in California, he moved to Thailand when he was 3 years old. Morse, now 30, lives in Chiang Mai, which he calls home. According to Morse, growing up in Chiang Mai greatly shaped who he is today. To him, the city is rich with local northern culture and subcultures of different minority groups, which he has come to appreciate despite attending an international school.

”Before becoming the host of this show, I did all kinds of odd jobs in America,” he added. ”I was a white water rafting guide. I worked as a photographer for a few local papers. And I played guitar at various restaurants and bars at night while I was living in Southern California. I love to play music _ it’s a big passion of mine. My aunt owns a sushi bar, so I helped her roll sushi at the restaurant, as well. It was definitely long working hours, which I guess now looking back was good preparation for the long hours of working in the television industry _ long, long hours,” he said.

Morse has got the looks that cameras certainly love, and his language skills are an added bonus. But more importantly, he has a strong passion for history that is undeniable, with an educational background in theology. ”I got my undergraduate degree in California and I was working on my master’s [degree] in Tennessee. It was a research-based degree, so I was constantly spending long hours in the library, uncovering historical mysteries of those periods,” he added. ”So I was no stranger to lots of reading when it came to this job and preparing for each episode we filmed.”

However, when he returned to Thailand in 2008, Morse decided to switch to business from religious studies. ”When I got back to Thailand I enrolled in an MBA course at Payap University [International College] for a semester before I was offered to work on this show,” he explained. ”As I turned 30, I began to think about what I really wanted to do with my life. I knew I didn’t want to teach theology _ perhaps in the future, but at this point in my life I didn’t want to. So, I thought about starting my own business or experimenting with something new. Luckily, the choice was very easy to make once I was chosen to host the show,” he said.

”You see, that’s the beauty of life. You start out doing one thing, then your life can change when it encounters something different as new opportunities present themselves. That’s why I think life is an adventure. It’s a journey, a process of discovery that you just have to go with.”

Payap University and the Institute of Religion, Culture and Peace (IRCP) are proud to announce that renowned scholar of Buddhist studies, Professor Donald Swearer, has received a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship to affiliate with the IRCP for five months from 15 October 2010 to 15 March 2011, to undertake a research project entitled: “Buddhist Economics and Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy.”

Overview of “Buddhist Economics and Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy”

Despite the monastic nature of many Buddhist traditions, throughout their histories they were not isolated from the political economies of the cultures in which they were embedded. In traditional monarchical polities Buddhist institutions were sponsored by wealthy elites, and were the recipients of economic largess legitimated by the ideology of karma and merit, in some instances involving land and labor. In the post-colonial period, theories of Buddhist economics have emerged, in some instances as a critique of free market capitalism and in others as the basis for newly emerging economies on national, regional, and local levels, e.g. U Nu’s Buddhist socialism. Dr. Swearer’s research proposes to critically examine recent scholarly and normative literature on Buddhist economics within the Theravada Buddhist ambit with particular attention to Thailand, e.g. the work of Charles F. Keyes, P.A. Payutto, Buddhasdasa Bhikkhu; and to analyze and interpret Thailand’s philosophy of sufficiency economy through the lens of Buddhist economics.

Dr. Donald Swearer Donald was appointed as Director of the Center for the Study of World Religions (CSWR) and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at Harvard Divinity School (HDS) in 2004 and is now Distinguished Visiting Fellow at CSWR. Dr. Swearer went to HDS from Swarthmore College where he had taught since 1970, most recently as the Charles and Harriet Cox McDowell Professor of Religion. Previously, he was in the Department of Religion at Oberlin College and has held several visiting professorships, including the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Hawaii where in 1993 he was the Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies. In 2000-01 he served as Hershey Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at the Divinity School. Professor Swearer has received numerous research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Program, and the Guggenheim Foundation, among others. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Association for Asian Studies, the American Society for the Study of Religion, and the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies. He has held a variety of editorial posts for several academic journals, including the Journal of Asian Studies, the Journal of Religious Ethics, and Religious Studies Review. His recent books include The Buddhist World of Southeast Asia, 2nd rev. ed. (2008), Becoming the Buddha: The Ritual of Image Consecration in Thailand (2004), Sacred Mountains of Northern Thailand and Their Legends (2004), and The Legend of Queen Cama (1998).

WHY OPERA? For 400 years opera has been one of the most beloved art forms in Europe. At its beginning, in early-17th-century Italy, opera was a courtly pleasure. For economic reasons, and because of operas growing popularity, the courtly opera houses were opened to the general public, who could purchase tickets. At the present time, Germany is a unique center of the European operatic tradition, having more than 80 opera houses. Why are there so many opera houses in Germany? How does an opera house function? How long does it take to produce an opera? Who is responsible for its success? Last but not least, why are operas, some of which were written 400 years ago, still popular? If you are interested in some possible answers to these questions, please join us for a few days and get involved in the art of opera, the “power station” of the emotions.

Dr. Ralf Eisinger was born in the southwest of Germany and grew up in Germany and Italy. After studying musicology and theater arts in Munich, he worked as a theater historian and exhibition curator in Brunswick. He was also was a dramaturge at the National Theater in Mannheim and the Badisches State Theater in Karlsruhe. Later Mr. Eisinger went to Rostock, where he was an opera director. He currently works as an art historian in Berlin and lives with his family in Italy.

Dr.Larry Berman, an internationally acclaimed scholar of the Vietnam War and American presidency, has been named the 2010 Faculty Research Lecturer by his peers at UC-Davis and is the author or co-author of 12 books. Miroslav Nincic, a colleague at UC-Davis has remarked: “For Dr. Berman, political science and the knowledge we generate is not simply a vehicle for intra-academic debate and discussions. It is meant to provide a recognizable link to the real world and … to make political science relevant to the real world.” Among his many honors, Dr. Berman has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council for Learned Societies. A committed teacher, he received the Outstanding Mentor of Women in Political Science Award from the Women’s Caucus for Political Science. He also has been a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a scholar in residence at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Center in Bellagio, Italy.

A faculty member of the McCormick Faculty of Nursing at Payap University, along with a faculty member of the College of Nursing, Yonsei University, have collaborated on a cross cultural study related to nursing ethics, specifically as it relates to end-of-life care. The Principal Investigators for this study are Assistant Professor Dr. Prathana Langkarpint (Payap University) and Dr. Sanghee Kim (Yonsei University). The title of their research collaboration is “Nurses’ Ethical Decision Making Around End of Life Care: Cross Cultural Study between Thailand and Korea.”

Background:
End-of-life care is a common issue which impacts families in both Thailand and Korea. Nurses play a crucial role in this most delicate and complex scenario. The good care that nurses’ provide in end-of-life situations can dramatically impact the quality-of-life of both the patient and their families. Nurses will generally rely on their own perceptions, judgment, and behavior to employ ethical decision making throughout the process. In today’s globalized society, it is helpful to know how both Thai and Korean nurses reach ethical decisions during end-of-life care to ensure the utmost in both humane treatment, as well as being sensitive to cultural norms and needs. There should then be, perhaps, an educational program for nurses which recognizes the importance of end-of-life care and the appropriate methods which should be employed which takes into account cultural differences.

The purpose of this study:
1. To identify and compare factors and structures of nurses’ ethical decision making during end-of-life care (NEDM-ECOLCS).
2. To identify the similarities and differences in nurses’ ethical decision making during end-of-life care, including perceived professional accountability, moral reasoning, moral agency, and moral practice.
3. To identify factors affecting nurses’ ethical decision making among both Thai and Korean nurses.

Thursday 21 January: “HOME” (2009 / 93 min)

Belgian aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and his team traveled around the planet over 18 months to make this film. This movie shot from the air over fifty countries has a mission and carries a message for humanity: to become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the Earth’s riches and change its patterns of consumption.

Thursday 28 January: “CRUDE IMPACT” (2006 / 97 min)

CRUDE IMPACT is a powerful and timely story that deftly explores the inter-connection between human domination of the planet and the discovery and use of oil.
This documentary film exposes our deep-rooted dependency on the availability of fossil fuel energy and examines the future implications of peak oil — the point in time when the amount of petroleum worldwide begins a steady, inexorable decline. Journeying from the West African delta region to the heart of the Amazon rainforest, from Washington to Shanghai, from early man to the unknown future, CRUDE IMPACT chronicles the collision of our insatiable appetite for oil with the rights and livelihoods of indigenous cultures, other species and the planet itself. It is a thought-provoking story filled with discovery, sorrow, outrage, humor and ultimately, hope.

Thursday 4 February: “THE POWER OF COMMUNITY” (2007 / 53 min)

A documentary about the kinds of adaptations we could make to living in a world constrained by the need to radically cut back on fossil fuel use to reduce CO2 pollution. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Cuba lost its cheap oil supply and had to learn how to adapt. It was hard, but they did it.
This documentary takes you through various aspects of life in Cuba – Economy, transportation, health-care, agriculture, education – and explores how they dealt with the dramatic reduction of fossil fuels to a mere fraction of their pre-1990 levels. It was nice to meet the people, see the sights, and hear the sounds. The overall feeling was that the Cubans had improved the quality of their life (after a difficult “Special Period”). Their health was better, greater sense of community, better food and healthier land. The director was left with the question: Why should we wait until we run out of oil? Let’s do it now. The part not expected was how it challenged the understanding of the difference between a Communist country and Capitalism. Did you know that a greater percentage of Cubans own their own home than in America? More farmers now own their own land? Sort of turns the notion of what a “Free-Market” is on its head…

Thursday 11 February: “BLIND SPOT” (2009 / 91 min)

BLIND SPOT is a documentary film that illustrates the current oil and energy crisis that our world is facing. Whatever measures of ignorance, greed, or wishful thinking, we have put ourselves at a crossroads, which offer two paths with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels we will choke the life out of the planet, and if we don’t, our way of life will collapse.
Directed by Adolfo Doring; features interviews with William Catton Jr., Max Fraad Wolff, Richard Heinberg, Kenneth Deffeyes, Albert Bartlett, Roscoe Bartlett, James Hansen, David Pimentel, Joseph Tainter, David Korten, Jason Bradford, Elke Weber, Mary-Ann Hitt, Terry Tamminen, Ted Caplow and Derrick Jensen.

Thursday 18 February: “WHAT A WAY TO GO – LIFE AT THE END OF EMPIRE” (2007 / 125 min)

A middle class white guy comes to grips with Peak Oil, Climate Change, Mass Extinction, Population Overshoot and the demise of the American Lifestyle.
What is it doing to us, as thoughtful human beings, as we face the overwhelming challenges of:

  • Peaking fossil fuel flow rates?
  • Critically degraded ecosystems?
  • A changing climate?
  • An exploding global population?
  • Teetering global economies?
  • An unstable political climate?

And what is it doing to the rest of the life on this planet?

Foundation Open Society Institute (FOSI), a Swiss charitable foundation, has awarded Payap University a grant in the total amount of US$8,000.00 for the period from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. The grant is made to support the project — Equipping Thai Stateless Children with Legal Knowledge: Rights and a How-to Guide. This project is initiated and will be conducted by the Payap University Legal Aid Club.

Background
In Northern Thailand, it has been found that statelessness remains an issue of concern. Different ethnic minorities reside in the remote highlands of Thailand. These people represent members of many different tribes. However, the Thai government officially recognizes only nine tribes. Several other minority groups receive no official recognition, including children born and raised in Thailand. The Payap University Legal Aid Club recognizes the contributions of stateless persons to our community, culture, region and nation and aims to train and enhance the capacity of future practitioners so that our students can impart their knowledge to better serve the society.

The objectives of the project are:

  1. To train future practitioners about citizenship law for stateless children;
  2. To impart legal knowledge to stateless children, including a better understanding of their status, rights and the complex process for obtaining citizenship in Thailand; and
  3. To enable the greater community to understand the issues related to statelessness and to allow greater understanding, tolerance and acceptance of stateless children and adults in the Thai community.

At the same time, OSI builds alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. OSI places a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities.

Investor and philanthropist George Soros in 1993 created OSI as a private operating and grantmaking foundation to support his foundations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Those foundations were established, starting in 1984, to help countries make the transition from communism. OSI has expanded the activities of the Soros foundations network to encompass the United States and more than 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Each Soros foundation relies on the expertise of boards composed of eminent citizens who determine individual agendas based on local priorities.

The US Consul General, the honorable Michael Morrow, paid a visit to Payap University on the 27th of October 2009. His visit was on behalf of the US State Department for their role in supporting Payap’s Institute of Religion, Culture, and Peace (IRCP). The United States Embassy, through their Small Grants Program, awarded Payap University US$7,000 (or approx. 245,000 baht at 35:1), to enable the IRCP to conduct joint workshops with Yala Islamic University. Included in the picture are, from right to left, Dr. Mark Tamthai (Director of the IRCP), the Consul General, Ms. Sirilert Krasaechai (Assistant to the President of Payap), and Mr. Samuel Santisuk Chinnapongse (Director for the Office of Institutional Advancement).

Background: In 2008, the IRCP developed a 30-hour General Education course on Peace and Reconciliation. This course is required for all undergraduate students at Payap beginning in June 2009. Both the Thai and U.S. governments (specifically the US Embassy BKK) have provided financial support for the development of this course. It has since become the model for this type of course in Thai higher education. At current, Payap University and Yala Islamic University are the only two institutions in Thailand conducting such a program.

The newly funded project will involve two 2-day workshops, each to be conducted at Payap University, Chiang Mai province and Yala Islamic University, Yala province. The first workshop was held at Payap from 27-28 Oct 2009. The second is tentatively scheduled to be held in Yala province in March 2010. The workshops will focus on providing an overview of the General Education curriculum conducted by the host institution(s), course development, course contents and the challenges and successes of their respective courses. Each group will conduct a cross-examination of the General Education program of the host institution, followed by a discussion on how to improve content and delivery. The two institutions will also discuss issues pertaining to peacebuilding and explore the possibility of future partnerships and collaborations. The funding received will cover the travel expenses, accommodation, meal allowances and workshop materials.

This grant is being administered by the PYU Office of Institutional Advancement.

Taiwan Flood Relief Donation Box
One of your class-mates, Wan-Yu Chen (“Fanny”), has written the following message in a call for assistance in post-typhoon Taiwan:August 8th was Father’s Day in Taiwan – which was the day the typhoon hit the southern part of Taiwan. Families should have been celebrating for their father, but the happiness turned into sadness after this day.The typhoon hit so hard after passing through the south that it also brought floods into Taiwan for 3 days. 8 cities were affected after this typhoon: Zhang-Hua, Nan-Tou, Yun-Lin, Jia-Yi, Tai-Nan, Gao-Xiong, Ping-Dong and Tai-Dong.
The worst damaged city is Gao-Xiong with 66 people dead and 500 people missing to this very day. According to the latest news, the total deathtoll is 121 and 536 people missing – with still increasing numbers. The agriculture of Taiwan is located in the southern part, and the total damage of Taiwan’s agriculture is up to “8 billion 800 million yuan.” Houses were destroyed. Factories were destroyed. Taiwan has not experience such destruction in 50 years.

Now, the Taiwanese government is cleaning up the southern part of Taiwan, but there are still some flooded areas.

I am hoping the students of Payap can help donate some money to assist Taiwan. Large or small amounts, even 1 baht can help a lot. I (Wan-Yu Chen) have given the first donation out of Chiang Mai. The money goes directly to the Foundation of Tzu-Chi, an NGO which helps all around the world. Here is the website of it if you want to check it out: http://www.tzuchi.org/. All donations will go towards rebuilding the damage and providing assistance for the affected residents without homes, food, or belongings in the south of Taiwan. I will be send the money in the name of Payap International College to Taiwan. After making the donation, I will obtain a receipt of donation to prove the money will be used to assist relief work in Taiwan.

The donation box will be in the Office of International Campus Life (Pentecost Bldg, Room 110). I hope everyone can work together to help this cause. Thank you. Questions? Contact Fanny (wanyu0718@hotmail.com)

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program, has awarded Payap University US$500,000 (or approx. 17,500,000 baht at 35:1) to construct a Pharmacology R&D Center (PRDC). This center will be a complete medical technology training and education center catering to the needs of the Payap student body, faculty, medical researchers, and the community. The funds provided by USAID/ASHA will represent nearly 50% of the total construction cost of the facility, with the remainder coming from other sources. The PRDC will be a stand-alone building which will be used for conducting pharmaceutical research and education. Upon completion of construction, Payap will begin the second phase which is the procurement of the minimum necessary equipment comprising the R&D portion, or a small scale pilot plant.

Michael Zager, Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in Performing Arts, professor of music and founder of Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) commercial music program and FAU’s Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, is spending one month working with the College of Music at Payap University from mid-July to mid-August 2009. This will be his third time collaborating at Payap University. In 2006 and 2008, he was awarded Fulbright Specialist Grants, which were hosted by Payap University. His mission was to develop a commercial music program and record label that emulates the programs at FAU.

As part of his assignment, Zager produced a CD titled “Tales From the River,” which morphs Southeast Asian instruments with western instruments. This summer, he will produce a CD in Payap University’s new recording studio, which Zager helped to design.

Zager was commissioned by the Fulbright Program in Thailand to write a song commemorating the 60th anniversary of the program, which occurs in 2010. The song, titled “We Learn to Care,” was composed and arranged by Michael Zager, and the lyrics were written by Porntip Kanjananiyot, executive director of the U.S. Educational Foundation in Thailand; John Latartara of the University of Mississippi; and independent lyricist Aram Schefrin. Zager recorded the song with members of the FAU Chamber Singers, under the direction of Patricia Fleitas, as well as FAU student and faculty musicians. Alejandro Sanchez-Samper, FAU’s assistant director of commercial music, mixed the song.

“I am looking forward to returning to Thailand this summer and working, once again, with my wonderful colleagues and the commercial music students at Payap University,” said Zager. “Payap University has become a second home.”

The goals of the Fulbright Program in Thailand are to create cross-cultural awareness, build networks and encourage caring.

The United States Embassy, through their Small Grants Program, has awarded Payap University US$7,000 (or approx. 245,000 baht at 35:1), to enable the Institute of Religion, Culture and Peace (IRCP) to conduct joint workshops with Yala Islamic University.

The two workshops will be held in October 2009 and March 2010.

Professional Development Seminar (PDS)

The PDS is a year-long program to assist students (instructors and staff are also invited) in their personal, academic, and professional development. Sessions on varying topics (like intercultural communication, study abroad, exam preparation, academic writing, resume writing, interview skills, financial management…etc) will be offered every other week.

Student Incentive (in addition to the wealth of information you’ll receive from attending 🙂
– attend 5 out of 7 sessions per term and receive a PDS Certificate
– attend 7 out of 7 sessions per term and receive a PDS Certificate with distinction

PDS 1: “So…What’s up with Culture, Anyway?”
” Culture is more often a source of conflict than of synergy. Cultural differences are a nuisance at best and often a disaster.” -Prof. Geert Hofstede, Emeritus Professor, Maastricht University.

Whether you agree with Prof. Hofstede or not, we can’t deny that intercultural interaction can be at the core of misunderstandings….or, depending on the individual, understanding. This session will look at the role of culture, the merit of understanding it, and the potential embarrassment and repercussions of not even bothering to understand. We’ll look at examples, both humorous and not-so-humorous, of cross-cultural mishaps in a number of real-world settings: the multicultural workplace, international business, and everyday international life.

Whether you’re new or old to the Payap international community, going through “culture shock” or “been there, done that,” plan to endeavour the international business scene or just trying to navigate the Payap scene, or simply want to know more about the effects of culture and how to save yourself from embarrassing, or, worse-case scenario, relationship-altering situations, come to the first installment of PDS!

Let’s face it, we’re truly international. Why not make the most of it?

Dear International College Students:

“Assembly” is a long-time Payap tradition.

The purpose of Assembly is two-fold: 1) to assist Payap students to find their vocation or “voice.” Students will have the opportunity to explore their values, abilities, and passions and connect them with the needs of the world to discern a vision and mission for a life well-lived. 2) to give Payap students the opportunity to hear some of the ethical teachings of the Christian tradition and to see their value for all people. The teachings are presented in a way respectful of other faith traditions and students are invited to explore and articulate their own deepest values.

For the past two years we have held one three-hour long assembly per term. This year we are offering 7 Assemblies per term. Each assembly will be on a Friday afternoon from 1-2 pm. This year our theme will be MP3: eM-Powering Payap Peacemakers. We will use the 8 Habits of Stephen Covey as the framework.

Announcement from Student Development Department

Procedure for Using Medical Services at McCormick Hospital

Delays in registration and payment of tuition fees have prevented the Health Services Office of the Student Development Department from sending the list of registered and paid-up students to McCormick Hospital. Therefore students who need to use the services of McCormick Hospital at this time should proceed as follows:

1. When you arrive at McCormick Hospital, present your receipt of payment of tuition for semester 1/2009 to the Finance Department at the hospital together with your Payap University student card.

2. If you have not yet paid your tuition for semester 1/2009 and therefore do not have a tuition receipt, you need to pay any hospital expenses yourself and then request reimbursement after you have paid your tuition. To request reimbursement, bring the following to the Health Services Office in the Panthakorn Building:

2.1 Receipt for medical services received at McCormick Hospital

2.2 Medical certificate from the doctor at McCormick Hospital

2.3 Photocopy of tuition receipt for semester 1/2009

2.4 Photocopy of Payap University student card

3. When the list of registered and paid-up students has been completed, the Student Development Department will forward the list to McCormick Hospital. The tourism paper “Towards Sustainable e-Tourism: Using ICT and KM”, which was submitted by several Payap University professors, was accepted for the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism Management 2009. It will be published as part of the conference proceedings.

For more information on the conference please visit the conference web site at http://www.tourism.mju.ac.th/index.html.

Draft Abstract

For sustainable tourism development, there are not only the needs of present tourists and making regions accessible but also the needs of all other resources such as political stability, healthy economics, social cohesion, cultural integrity and heritages. When a strong social cohesion fails to hold the social infrastructure together, there is growing distress about declining community participation. Moreover, as social cohesion is under strain, creating close ties, common values and helping relationships have become more important to a sustainable society. The result of lacking social cohesion creates enormous impact to a malfunctioned society that is mistrustful, tense and anxiety-haunted. In this community, a weak social cohesion exacerbates existing social problems. As a final point, in the face of social and cultural changes have an effect on the disappearance of Thai arts and cultural artifacts. This phenomenon has also amplified the weakening social cohesion and diminishing cultural integrity and heritages in Thailand. To some extent, this evaporation results in social disorganization and disintegration of community network. As undesirable development grows, it may result in negative riffle effects on tourism in the long term. In this paper, ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and KM (Knowledge Management) are used to provide a conceptual framework for sustainable e-tourism by strengthen social cohesion.

You may be aware, there is a column in the Chiang Mai Mail paper called ‘Life in Chiang Mai’. The paper would like to invite students from all over Chiang Mai to write this column for a limited time.

Starting issue; May 20. Copy must be submitted to this address charityrooftopparty@gmail.com before May 10 for the first issue.

This will hopefully give the readers a different perspective of ‘Life in Chiang Mai’, and it gives the students the opportunity to see their work in print.

Students should either write approx. 600 words / alternatively 300 words (for two contributions each week). Students should give their own views for ‘Life in Chiang Mai’ without naming individuals (where possible). The editor reserves the right to edit the copy. Students should give their age and their school / educational estabishment. Students may request a ‘pen name’ – however they must also give their proper name.

If this proves to be a success – it may be continued on a monthly basis.

The regular columnist will choose which essay to be printed.

The Luce Foundation awards US$330,000 to Payap University

Payap University, Chiang Mai, Thailand has been awarded a three-year grant of US$330,000 from The Henry Luce Foundation in New York City (USA). The funds will be used for projects at the McGilvary College of Divinity (MCD) and the Institute for Religion, Culture and Peace (IRCP).

The McGilvary College of Divinity has been allocated grant funds for project “LIFT” (Leadership Institute for Future Theologians). This project will recruit and train up to 6 new Thai Professors for MCD in the academic areas of greatest need. The grants will provide scholarships for advanced study. All recipients of the scholarships will be expected to return to teach at MCD upon completion of their degrees.

The Institute for Religion, Culture and Peace will receive US$ 30,000 per year for three years to support the work of the Director of the Institute while endowment funds are being raised.

Dr. Pradit Takernrangsarit, President of Payap University and Acting Dean of the McGilvary College of Divinity, believes that this significant grant from the Luce Foundation will enable the university to develop qualified Thai instructors and enhance interfaith activities and peace studies.

Payap University is Thailand’s first private liberal arts and pre-professional university. Established in 1974 by the Church of Christ in Thailand, The university strives to adhere to its motto, “Truth and Service”.

The Henry Luce Foundation was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the co-foundation and editor-in-chief if Time Inc., to honor his parents who were missionary educators in China. The Foundation builds upon the vision and values of four generations of Luce family: broadening knowledge and encouraging the highest standards of service and leadership.

Payap University held its 30th Graduation ceremony this past Saturday, 24 November, 2007. As always, this was a grand spectacle filled with the appropriate pageantry and splendor befitting such an important event. Joining the over 1,200 proud students receiving their diplomas were several hundred equally proud instructors, administrators, and several dozen staff members who contributed in making this gala another memorable graduation. It was estimated that over 10,000 visitors descended onto our small–but meticulously manicured–campus. They were treated to a well orchestrated ceremony which was so impeccably organized that it would prove hard to match next year.

Along with the Saturday evening ceremony, students also participated in a picture-taking ceremony the morning prior. Interested personnel can view photos of the events by visiting the main Payap University website or by clicking the following:

The first-ever Payap University International College (IC) newsletter has been launched. Simply click the “Newsletter” tab on the home page and find out the latest happenings in Payap’s international community. “The IC” is the brainchild of first year IC student Mark Hefner. Mark literally took it upon himself to create the newsletter when he discovered that all the interesting events occurring at Payap were going on unnoticed. Armed with only a camera in hand (and a song in his heart), Mark set out to put together a summary of events that happened during the month. In doing so, he talked to numerous students, staff, and faculty, and attended events in person in order to obtain material for his inaugural newsletter. Mark intends to make this newsletter a monthly event, despite the huge amount of effort required. Well done Mark and keep up the good work! 2007-11-05 00:00:00

The writing center’s mission is to help students improve their writing skills. Tutors will work individually with you to examine the strengths and weaknesses of your paper. Although we do not proofread or edit papers, we will help you with ideas for organization, argument and style. Whatever stage of the writing process you are in – idea development, outlining, first draft – we will help you with ideas on how to get to the next stage. The center will also provide or direct you to resources for improving your writing. To get assistance on the Mae Khao campus, see Aj. Toby in the Learning Resource Center(LRC) to sign up for a tutorial session, or stop by the LRC during the tutorial hours – Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. For assistance on the Kaew Nawarat campus, stop by Room 127 in the Somsawalee Building during the tutorial hours on Thursdays from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

UPDATE (13 Nov 07): The writing center has moved! The EQD office has prepared a section with room (L414) on the fourth floor of the main library (Mae Khao campus) where English text books and learning resources are located. This area will be called the “Writing & Research Support Center.”

The library staff will construct a sign and prepare resources for all interested personnel. Aj Tom Hughes has volunteered to assist in this endeavor. Services will be available commencing 19 November 2007.
